Parent consultations are designed to provide specific and practical guidance to parents looking for help with the challenges, questions and quandaries that abound in life with young children. The number and length of sessions varies on a case-by-case basis and may range from one to several sessions focusing on a particular concern, or address a range topics. The goal of these sessions is to give parents the practical tools and conceptual framework they need to respond effectively to the issues at hand. Some parents consult with us for a single session and then access follow-up assistance as needed in through brief phone support; others consult with us at regular intervals as they prepare to meet upcoming issues in their children’s development.
Some of our most common consultation topics include: sleep, discipline and behavioral issues, emotional or relationship concerns, family stresses and transitions, school fit and timing, and potty training. However, this list is far from exhaustive. Parent consultations are as varied as the kids and families we work with.
In all cases, we work from a perspective that includes psychological research, practical wisdom and a temperamentally specific approach to each child. We do this by arming parents with a base of psychological understanding, and a cadre of practical tools and techniques. In some cases, we will suggest using temperament evaluation or other assessment tools in conjunction with a consultation in order to design a precise plan for addressing a child’s issues and supporting his or her unique needs.
